10 Things I’ve Learnt From a Lifetime of Mental Illness 🗣

1.) meds are not a quick fix. Give it time to kick in and work. Always gets worse before it gets better. Please give it time.

2.) meds are not a cure. Please look into talking therapies to try to target the “root cause” of your illness.

3.) self-care is important. Spend the day watching Netflix. Let the plates pile in the sink. Call in sick for work (mental health is just as important as physical health). Give yourself one day to feel everything, to do nothing, then shove it in a draw for a few days.

4.) but also kind of 3.) Learn to compartmentalise your stresses. Write lists. Give yourself a daily routine but include lots of breaks (spoons theory?)

5.) I know it’s hard but stop letting your illness control you. Own that bitch.

6.) Your partner being sick is not an excuse to put up with abuse or to take less than you deserve.

7.) you being sick is not an excuse to put up with abuse or take less than you deserve.

8.) Caffeine really does not help with the physical or emotional symptoms of mental health conditions.

9.) REACH OUT FOR HELP. From your friends, family, psych team, your dr. If you’re struggling, feeling suicidal, having hallucinations or delusions, just reach out to someone and NEVER suffer in silence.

10.) be kind to yourself.
